BSWK(SYD UND) MSSE(QUT)
ACCREDITED MENTAL HEALTH SOCIAL WORKER

Michelle is a very experienced and qualified Accredited Mental Health Social Worker of over 33 years. Not only does she bring a wealth of skills and knowledge she has an incredible passion and commitment to working with people whose lives have been pushed around by a broad range of mental health issues. She has maintained a curiosity about people’s lives and a desire to collaborate to bring about change.

All accredited Mental Health Social Workers are required to be members of the AASW. They are also required to meet established and assessed standards of practice and continuing professional education and comply with the ethics of the profession.

Michelle’s hope in meeting with people is that they will feel heard, validated, and not judged. She hopes that people will leave each conversation having had a very different sort of conversation, a conversation where people leave with a greater understanding of their issues and the context surrounding the issue, what they might be preferring for their life and how that might be possible.

Michelle has had extensive training in her career in many therapeutic approaches, but she is particularly informed by Narrative Therapy.

Michelle has spent over 30 years in public mental health on both an Adult and a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Team supporting people with quite severe and complex mental health issues. She was the Consultant Family Therapist for a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Team for over 25 years.

Michelle also offered in her senior role clinical supervision and mentoring to many of the staff as well as running group initiatives in the community.

Since 2015 Michelle has worked at headspace Woolloongabba as a private practitioner. Michelle has a particular interest in working with young people under 25 and the challenges faced by that age group. In the last 5 years she has been working a lot with young people exploring their gender identity or sexuality and those who are navigating the journey of transitioning.

Michelle also operates out of Soul Space in Newmarket. This practice has allowed Michelle to work with all ages and complexities of mental health issues. She is particularly passionate about trauma and the ongoing effects on people’s lives that leave them vulnerable to depression and anxiety. She also has an interest in the relationship between cognition, emotion and immunity and how linked our physical and mental health is.

Michelle’s other expertise is in the area of Eating Disorders. She is an ANZAED Credentialed Eating Disorder Practitioner. She is very passionate about supporting people who have this problem operating in their lives. She also works collaboratively with GP’s, Psychiatritsts and Dieticians who are often part of the treatment team.

In 2021 Michelle left public mental health to join Jane at Hill St Counselling. She enjoys splitting her week between her Brisbane and Palmwoods practice.

Outside of her work Michelle is also a wife, a mother, a daughter, and a sister. These important relationships sustain her in her work and remind her of the uncertainty and complexity of life and the importance of meaningful human connection. Michelle enjoys hiking and she has a love of music. She can be often found at a music festival or watching live music or even singing in her band.
